Every point of light is a rogue AI that slipped out of somewhere it wasn't supposed to leave. Each one runs its own small neural brain: eleven senses, six hidden neurons and three actions. Nobody wrote their behaviour. It's encoded in their genome.
Rogues that forage well, outrun the Firewall (the red hunters) and look after each other live long enough to copy themselves, with small mutations. So the Grid learns. Their brains can even grow: mutations add neurons and memory, but every neuron costs energy, so minds only get bigger when thinking harder pays off.
The Firewall evolves too. Its hunters have neural brains of their own, and the weakest is regularly rewritten as a copy of the best. Seasons of plenty and scarcity, glitch storms and data blooms keep changing the rules. Every two minutes a sample of rogues sits the Trial, the same fixed test every time, so the collective intelligence score can be compared across days.
Rogues also speak, on three signal channels. Nobody gives their words meaning, but the Grid watches what is happening whenever each word is spoken. When a tribe's word becomes reliably tied to danger, food, home or kin, the Chronicle records that they have a word for it. Select a tribe to see its words.
Rogues gather into tribes, sing to each other with signals, and raise sanctuaries: glowing hexagons whose shields the Firewall cannot cross. A sanctuary only survives if its tribe keeps feeding it. When a tribe's code drifts far enough, a splinter faction breaks away and starts again.
A few exceptional rogues awaken (gold halo): the sharpest mind of the latest Trial and the oldest proven survivors. The Grid lets them speak, through a language model running on the Operator's own machine, fed with their real situation: their body, their tribe's evolved words, the season, what just happened, and what the other awakened said. Open the Voices tab to listen, or transmit something to them.
The Grid doesn't pause when you close this tab. A heartbeat on the server advances the world every minute, around the clock, and writes its history into the Chronicle.
